How Non-Traditional Work Can Catapult Your Career

There's nothing wrong with a traditional career path, but it doesn't have to be the only one. There are many reasons to work outside of traditional employment and we champion the many reasons at ATvantage; whether it's more flexibility, exposure, or working in a way that fits the needs of where you're at in your career as an athletic trainer.

Whatever your reason, working non-traditionally can be an important step in catapulting your career.

Here's how it can help:

1. Diversifying Your Resume

Non-traditional work will give you a chance to gain experience in different settings. Whether you're a recent grad or an experienced professional who wants to explore what's out there, being open to non-traditional opportunities in athletic training can pave the way for a diverse resume and new skills. This can help you see how different settings operate and give you a better understanding of where your strengths lie.

2. Gaining Valuable Networking Opportunities

Taking on non-traditional, specifically per diem opportunities, can provide networking opportunities that a traditional position doesn't. You will be exposed to and work with different settings and people which can connect you with other professionals you may otherwise not have access to. Being open to these experiences can lead to conversations that can offer new and unexpected paths.

3. Allows you time to grow a side hustle

We are huge proponents of pursuing different passions, but we often find that traditional opportunities don't allow the time or flexibility to explore those. Taking on non-traditional opportunities such as part-time or per diem work can allow you the flexibility to explore your passions outside AT while remaining in a profession you love. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, which is why we're so passionate about providing non-traditional opportunities in a historically traditional profession.

4. Presence in other areas of your life

We often have professionals who come to us that are experiencing a massive life change personally. Having flexible work opportunities is a non-traditional way of allowing you to remain active in the profession while being present for whatever other needs are in your life. Sometimes it’s a personal health diagnosis or one of a family member/friend, sometimes we're in a transition in our life becoming a spouse or parent, and sometimes we're simply at the mercy of what life throws at us.

Whatever your reasoning behind pursuing non-traditional work opportunities is, know that we are here to support and champion you in catapulting your career. It may not be the typical road you see most ATs going down, but what you get out of it is far greater than playing small and blending in.
