AT Shoutout: Brett Hinton

When we say we support your other passions, we mean it! We're here to make work work for you and this can be highlighted by AT, Brett Hinton's story.

Brett has been at his site, Monterey Trail in Elk Grove, California for the past 7 years. When he began contracting with ATvantage he had recently graduated from University of the Pacific and was looking for his first gig as a Certified Athletic Trainer. He had worked with Varsity Spirit over the summer and wanted to continue but needed something else flexible enough to allow him the time.

Brett shares, "The flexibility that I have from being an independent contractor allows me to have a second job (Varsity Spirit) where I work just as much. The flexibility that I have with ATvantage allows me to travel to many different competitions and camps around the country while continuing to hold my position with the high school."

He attributes his long stay at Monterrey Trail to truly enjoying the people he works with and how valued he feels by the supportive coaches and athletic director.

He also appreciates being self-employed, because as a dad, having control over his schedule is important and this allows him to work around his own availability and come in later if he has something to do with his kids.

"I have worked many different jobs and most of them tell you exactly what your hours are and there is no changing what they tell you. You have to put in a request to get days off and even then, you aren’t guaranteed to get the days off that you might need. Birthdays, anniversaries, and any other special events are a toss of the coin to get it off. Being self-employed puts my schedule in my own hands to make sure that I can spend these special days where I want most of the time."

As a company we preach work-life balance and having the opportunity to provide that to ATs like Brett is something we don't take for granted. Working in the AT profession isn't one-size-fits-all and the traditional way of doing things doesn't work for everyone.

In a profession with a high burnout rate, it is critical that we diversify working opportunities to not only sustain our valued healthcare providers but keep these ATs working in a profession they love, in a way that works for them!

Our Director of AT Operations, Ginny Garner, share, "Brett started at Monterey Trail with ATvantage the year we started working with the district. He has enmeshed himself in the culture of the school and is respected by athletes, parents, coaches, and admin."

Thank you Brett for the value you add and for trusting us to support you in your career!
